It is never too late to change your life. You can start something or stop anything at anytime regardless of your age, your past or your present situation.
If you have been smoking for decades, you can stop. If you have been going through mediocrity all your life, you can turn it around. If you feel lonely and need to find a partner, you can work on yourself and start dating again. Even if you’re now suffering from an illness, you can take positive and constructive actions that will add more meaning to your life.
If you are unhappy with your job, you can choose to change your job or your attitude. If you don’t like where you’re staying, you can move out somewhere else or make adjustments to suit your needs. If you are always broke and could certainly use more money, you can figure a way to earn a second income or reduce your spending.
So, what does it take to change from where you are now to where you’d rather be?
1. A Change in Your Attitude.
If you believe that it is never too late to change, you already have the right attitude
If you feel skeptical about it, consider going through your beliefs, past conditioning and values.
Reading about other people’s success stories may help change your mind. Here are a few examples.
i) Ocie Tune King was 94 when she received her degree.
ii) Miura scaled the peak of Mount Everest at 70. He has successfully reached the summit again at the age of 75 and 80.
iii) James Altucher founded and cofounded 20 companies. 17 of them failed. He was once a millionaire and then went from having $10 million in the bank to zero. But he started all over again and succeeded.
Do a search. You will find lots of stories to amend your belief and attitude about change.
2. The Willingness to Change.
After being wired to your habits, routines and thought patterns, change is not going to be easy.
But it is attainable.
The important thing to keep in mind is to make a firm decision to change and be willing to put in the efforts. And you must want it so much that you feel driven to do all you can to transform yourself.
3. Be Willing to Step Out of Your Comfort Zone.
You cannot grow and change your life if you are not willing to move out of your comfort zone.
Fear or the unknown could be the stumbling block. Your unwillingness to make some personal sacrifices is also a hindrance.
You can stay where you are if you want to. But if you want to use your full potential and become your best self, be willing to step out of the familiar territory.
Learn how to beat fear, resistance and inertia. Make a long list of reasons why you must change now. Think of how you will feel and what your life would be a year, 3 years and 5 years from now if you remain in your comfort zone.
4. Focus on One Thing.
Pick one thing you have thought of changing but have been putting it off. Now list 10 things you can do to make it happen. Pick one thing from the list and take action. Do it every day.
When you are working on something during the day, ask, “Is what I am doing bring me closer to my goal?” If it doesn’t, stop it. Don’t let your mind and actions wander off to unimportant tasks.
It helps if you can visualize the outcome you want to see and experience before it materializes.
5. Acquire New Knowledge and Skills.
What you have learned has not helped you become the person you aspire to be. Discard it. Forget about what you have been told or made to believe. You don’t need it anymore.
Begin to gather new knowledge and skills. You can find the information you need to get started and to keep moving in books and from video or audio recordings. And you can ask people for suggestions and guidance.
Once you acquire the knowledge, take action. Knowledge without action doesn’t produce results.
6. Maintain Good Health.
Make health your top priority. When you are able to maintain your physical, mental and emotional health in top form, you can go as far and as high as you want.
When Norman Cousins was 49, his doctor told him that he had only a few months to live. He lived up to the age of 75. So, if you are sick, don’t give up hope. Find out how to get well.
If you are overweight read about how it will affect your health in the long run. Find out how to burn off those calories. Learn about healthy eating and nutrition.
If you often feel stressed, anxious and depressed, use any mind-body exercise to calm and relax your mind as well as remove the strain and tension in your body.
7. Apologize and Forgive.
If you have hurt someone, apologize. It doesn’t matter if the person you have wronged will forgive you. By taking the initiative to apologize, it shows that you are sincere.
Forgive people who have hurt you. Forgive yourself. Let go of the feeling of guilt and anger so that you can move on with an open mind by leaving the baggage behind you for good.
Believe in yourself. Believe in possibility.
Believe that it is never too late to change your life, to start over and to do the right thing.
Be curious. Have fun. And enjoy your journey.
