How do you get what you want in life? Before you could achieve your goals, do you really know what you want to have, do and experience in your life?
i) What kind of job would you like to do?
ii) Do you wish for more money?
iii) Do you yearn to get out of debt?
iv) Do you want your relationship to improve?
It’s normal to desire for more and better things.
But why is that you don’t or can’t always manifest your desires?
There are several possibilities. One of the major reasons is because you have not set and written your goals.
Having a dream is merely wishful thinking unless you put it in writing.
The other probable cause could be procrastination. This might be due to fears and self-doubt.
And the third is, you don’t want to put in the effort but expect results and rewards.
So here are 8 effective ways to get what you want in life.
1. Write Your Goals
It is very important to set long-term, mid-term and short-term goals. You got to decide what you want to have, do, learn, and become.
Write down everything such as how much income you want to earn, what kind of relationship you want to have, what skills you want to develop, and so on.
Remember, if you don’t write your goals, it is just wishing. And wishing won’t get you far.
Put a deadline on each goal to give yourself a time limit to accomplish each one. Some of your goals may take a year. The others may take you 3 years, 5 years and 10 years to materialize.
Pick 4 out of the goals you plan to achieve within the next 12 months. Write down why you why you want to achieve them.
You got to have very strong personal reasons. The reasons will keep you going when you face challenges and setbacks.
Write down a list of things you will do to achieve each of the four goals. Maybe you could drop unproductive activities like cutting your television viewing hours.
Write down a list of new productive habits to develop. It could be something like spending at least half hour a day reading or studying a particular subject and an hour or two working on your project.
List down a list of your strengths and think how you can capitalize them.
2. Visualize Your Success
See the end in mind. Stephen Covey stated that we create things twice, first in our imagination and then in our real life.
So if you want your dreams to materialize, visualize them.
Spend several minutes at least twice a day visualizing yourself having achieved your goals. Imagine what your life would be like a year, 5 years and 10 years from now. Imagine the person you will become. See yourself experiencing the joy of your accomplishments.
Creating a vision board and writing positive affirmation on cards, which you can see often, would help a lot.

In order to get rid of these defeating beliefs, be aware of them. To be aware, notice the things you tell yourself through your actions.
Ask yourself why you didn’t do what you set out to do. You will come up with several excuses. They are actually your deep seated fears and your limiting beliefs. Question those fears and beliefs and then question the answers.
Keep telling and affirming to yourself that you choose to achieve that specific goal or something better than that.
Using positive affirmations and visualization are additional reinforcement to help you get rid of negative beliefs, self-doubts and fears.

The purpose is to give yourself some positive reinforcement.
When you reach one major goal, give yourself a bigger reward.
To make your life more challenging and to keep you growing and moving on, work on another goal from your main goal list.
8. Keep the Motivation Going
You may feel like slowing down or slacking once you’ve reached a goal. Don’t, because it can lead you astray.
You can take a little time off but only for a short while.
Continue to motivate yourself by achieving more goals. At the same time, feed your mind with positive inputs. Attend seminars or workshops where you can get ideas and inspiration. If you can’t attend one, listen and watch the recordings of the seminars.
And choose to spend your time with people who can inspire and bring the best in you. Avoid associating with your friends who sap your time and energy.
